SYRYN RECORDS

youth-run record label ★ professional internship ★ ages 14–25

WHAT IS SYRYN?

Syryn Records is our youth-run record label and internship program that offers exceptional teens and young adults from around the world a safe and empowering entryway into the MUSIC INDUSTRY. The label arose through the ingenuity of our community at a time when it was needed most—during the summer 2020 pandemic lockdowns. At the height of lockdown, we had 2 choices.

We could wait until it was safe to resume in-person programs, like our beloved AMPLIFY SLEEP AWAY CAMP, or we could quickly pivot and develop a different program that still served our community (just without the high-fives and hugs). We chose to pivot and create Syryn Records!

THE MISSION

Syryn Records provides a stable, uplifting platform for young artists’ voices to be heard while amplifying their experience of musical expression and the music industry. At our label, we feel that it is important to create a judgment-free, inclusive space and are committed to creating an environment where our artists, interns, and staff can all THRIVE through collective empowerment.

We’ve made it our mission to bring girls’, women’s, and non-binary and gender-expansive youth’s creative dreams to life through inclusivity and diversity.

You don’t need to be a global popstar like RIHANNA to revolutionize this industry and make it more equitable for women and gender-expansive people…having a passion for music and FEMINISM is enough.

But if you are Rihanna, plz have your people call our people ASAP, thanks!

“I’ve learned a lot about working on teams, and a lot about pre-production…

… just everything that goes on behind the scenes. This internship has also taught me how to reach out to people I want to talk to. It’s really given me the confidence to be outgoing and just get out there.”

“GR has taught me so much…

…from editing skills to client work to how to get a job. The biggest lesson I learned, though, is how big of an impact a photo can make. A single photo essay can tell the stories of thousands and fight for racial justice, and a photo used for street art can start a feminist revolution… Honestly, I’m not sure what I see myself doing after college and high school. No matter what I’m doing, though, I know I will take everything I learned from GR with me, which is so much.”

FAQs

Do you have to have been in Girls Rock as a camper, LIT, etc. in order to apply to be an intern?

Nope! You could have just landed here from Mars. If you’re high school- or college-aged and you’re ready to take your love of music to the next level, we want you to apply!

Do you have to live in or near Santa Barbara or SoCal in order to participate?

While some of our meetings and work happen remotely, it’s definitely helpful if you’re in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. That said, we’re open to including a few 100% remote interns if the fit is right.

How many other people will I be working with?

There will be about 30 interns and 2 dedicated program staff guiding you. Beyond that, you’ll also have access to other GRSB staff as needed, even some board members who work in the music industry!

Plus, there’s our special guest mentors…see above for examples of past rad special guests 🤩

Is there an application deadline?

Yes! If you’re interested in the Fall 2022 cohort, you must apply by August 15 (applications go live July 25). If you’re interested in being a featured artist on an upcoming compilation album, please inquire here.

How long does this internship last?

Each cohort lasts about 3 months.

How often do we meet?

Between group instruction/meetings, 1:1 check-ins, and other touches, plan to be in one or other type of meeting for at least an hour every week or every other week (depending on current projects, deadlines, etc.). Beyond that, interns can work on their projects either independently or collaboratively as often as they want/need til they’re done.

Does it cost money to join?

Nope! In fact, we’ll GIVE YOU community service hours or college credit (if allowable per your school) for all your hard work, as well as a letter of recommendation at the end of the program.

I just filled out the application! Now what?

We’ll reach out to all applicants shortly after the application deadline, so check your inbox! THANK YOU FOR APPLYING!!
